Indian defense force works day and night, 24*7 in order to keep our mother India safe. This Independence Day lets take few minutes to remember those Brave heroes who made the country proud by their bravery and Sacrificed their live for a “free” India that you see today.

Here are 5 Unspoken Real Heroes:

1. Havaldar Sanjeevan Singh Rana
Havildar Sanjeevan Singh Rana was from Himachal Pradesh. At 51 years, he was the only earner of his family. During the “Pathankot Attack”, he suffered five bullet injuries and martyred on the first day of the attack.
Holding back his tears, Havaldar Sanjeevan’s father Rattan Singh, himself an ex-servicemen, said his son’s supreme sacrifice for the nation while fighting terrorists will not go to waste.
“Let Indian government muster the courage and give a befitting reply to the terrorist’s country” he said.
“ I have also fought three wars when i was in the army. But my son has outdid me by making a supreme sacrifice. It’s a rare act of heroism and his sacrifice will be remembered. I also feel equally proud for other martyrs who gave their blood to Bharat Mata to protect its dignity and honour. I will send my grandson to the Indian army,” Rattan Singh said.

2. Colonel Santosh Mahadik
Colonel Santosh Mahadik was killed in a counter-infiltration operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2015.He was the second Army commanding officer to die in a terrorist encounter that year.

The 38-year-old Colonel was the son of a dairy farmer. His father supplies milk to the Sainik School in the Satara district of Maharashtra. Mahadik was the commanding officer of anti-terror force 41 Rashtriya Rifles. He received the Sena Medal for his bravery during Operation Rhino which was conducted in Assam in 2003.
He also trained the Indian Cricket Captain MS Dhoni for paragliding.

Talking about his family, his sacrifice made them more strong and his wife Swati Mahadik joined Army. She is now an officer in the army. A salute to all Families of the Indian army for their Courage and support!

3. Colonel MN Rai

He gave up his life fighting terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir, just a day after being awarded the Yudh Seva medal on Republic Day.

Colonel M N Rai hailed from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. He served with the Rashtriya Rifles and took over the command of the 42nd Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles in May 2013.

His sacrifice for the country will be remembered by all of us. On 27 Jan 2015, the Col Rai and his unit had received credible information about the presence of terrorists in the village under its area of operational control. After analyzing the situation, a decision was taken by the security forces to launch a joint operation by the Army, CRPF, and the police. The suspected militants were hiding in a house which was soon surrounded by the security forces. Soon a fierce gun battle occurred. After few firing the terrorists informed that they would surrender. Col Rai displaying good leadership and following the Army doctrine of WHAM(Winning Hearts and Minds), decided to give the militants an opportunity to surrender. The militants, however, took advantage of this act of compassion and started firing in order to escape. The session of gun firing started again and in that moment, Col Rai fought bravely and sacrificed his live for the nation.

4. Subedar Jagdish Chand

Subedar Jagdish Chand was in the mess at the Pathankot Air Base working as a cook, getting breakfast ready when a group of terrorists attacked around 3:30 am.
During the attack, this brave Subedar from Himachal Pradesh wrestled a rifle from the attacker and killed him with the terrorist’s own weapon. He was caught in a hail of enemy fire and succumbed to his injuries.

5. Lt Col EK Niranjan

He was a member of the bomb disposal squad of the NSG. He was also recommended for a gallantry award. Niranjan was an NSG Commando and killed while defusing a grenade after the Pathankot attack. Four jawans were also injured in the grenade blast.
Apart from Lt Col EK Niranjan, honourable defense members like Corporal Gursewak Singh, Sub Major Fateh Singh, Hawaldar Kulwant Singh were also killed during Pathankot attack.
